Photographs vs. Illustrations

Photographs stored in a computer are Bitmaps.  Bitmaps have a limited quality and therefore cannot be greatly increased in size.  Photographs (Bitmaps) intended for large scale printing must originally contain a high-resolution and thus producing a large file size.

Illustrations that are drawn on computers are called Vectors.  Vectors contain an infinite amount of quality.  As a result, you can increase the size with out losing quality.  Unfortunately, images and photographs cannot be saved as a vector.

(above) Increasing the size of a Photograph/Bitmap vs. an Illustration/Vector.

The Bitmap looks cloudy and unfocused while the Vector retains flawless quality.

Remember, ALL photographs, pictures, and images stored on a computer are Bitmaps and need to be High Resolution in order to print High Quality Signs!
